The unusual case of the appearance of radioiodine (I-131) uptake in lung metastases in a patient with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC)

Palyga Iwona , Kowalska Aldona , Walczyk Agnieszka , Holody Lukasz

A 67-year-old male with PTC (pT3N0) underwent a total thyroidectomy in February 2004. Subsequently he was treated with I-131 and radiotherapy (RT). Combined therapy did not normalize the serum thyroglobulin (TG). Because of elevated TG and persistent I-131 uptake in thyroid bed the patient received a total activity of 21275 MBq of I-131 in 4 years. The treatment was stopped in March 2007 due to a lack of I-131 uptake in the last post-therapeutic whole body scan (WBS) with stil...

Macroprolactinaemia: a clinical problem

Kowalska Aldona , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Palyga Iwona , Sluszniak Anna

Introduction: Prolactin is a hormone which is characterized with a high structural and functional polymorphism. Macroprolactin is one of the form of prolactin - it is a complex of monomeric prolactin and immunoglobulin. Macroprolactin is characterized with immunoreactivity and probably the lack of biological activity.Purpose: The main purpose of our study was to estimate the frequency of macroprolactin appearance among the patients with hyperpronactinaem...

The role of 131I whole body scan in post-operative assessment of patients with thyroid microcarcinoma

Suligowska Agnieszka , Walczyk Agnieszka , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Palyga Iwona , Kuchareczko Artur , Kowalska Aldona

Introdutcion: In recent years, thyroid microcarcinoma (TMC) predominates in the context of diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer. TMC has an excellent prognosis, its management is changed in the last few years, reducing surgical procedure and role of radioiodine ablation (RAI). Therefore, the question is what tests have a diagnostic value in patients with thyroid microcarcinoma after thyroidectomyThe aim of this study was to evaluate the role of 131 ...

Is ultrasensitive Tg measurement capable of substituting for Tg measurement after rhTSH stimulation in evaluation of effectiveness of radioiodine ablation in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer

Kowalska Aldona , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Palyga Iwona , Trybek Tomasz , Sluszniak Anna

Introduction: Undetectable concentration of Tg after rhTSH stimulation (Tg/rhTSH) is one of the most important criteria in evaluating the effectiveness of radioiodine ablation in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) treated with 131I.Aim: To evaluate the possibility of using L-T4 suppression treatment (Tg/L-T4) measurements by the ultrasensitive method TRACE (immunofluorescence method) with the KRYPTOR analyzer instead of the Tg/rhTSH measur...

Is Clinical Activity Score (CAS) a sufficient indicator of the response to therapy with i.v. methylprednisolone (MP) and external radiotherapy (RT) for Graves orbitopathy?

Palyga Iwona , Kowalska Aldona , Mysliwiec Janusz , Gajos Grazyna , Palyga Robert , Gasior-Perczak Danuta

Introduction: Treatment of Graves orbitopathy (GO) is one of the most difficult problems in clinical endocrinology. Objective: To establish the efficacy of the regime used in the treatment of GO and to analyze methods used to determine treatment effectiveness.Material: The study involved 30 patients with moderate to severe GO (according to the classification of EUGOGO) being in the active phase of GO.Method: ...

Post-ablative thyroglobulin level as a predictor of favourable prognosis in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer

Gadawska-Juszczyk Klaudia , Kowalska Aldona , Palyga Iwona , Mezyk Ryszard , Sluszniak Anna

Introduction: Postoperative thyroglobulin (TgPO) has a well established position as the prognostic factor for the follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) after total thyroidectomy. However, the presence of thyroid remnants after surgery may diminish predictive value of TgPO.The aim of the study is to evaluate prognostic value of stimulated postablative thyroglobulin level (TgPA) measured after 6–9 months after radioacitve iodi...

Prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC)

Kowalska Aldona , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Palyga Iwona , Siolek Monika , Sluszniak Anna , Mezyk Ryszard , Gozdz Stanislaw

Introduction: The correct 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) level plays a key role in the proper supply of vitamin D for the organism. Vitamin D deficiency may lead to an increased risk of development of various neoplasms, including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).Aim: Evaluation of the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with PTC and analysis of the relation between 25(OH)D levels and age, sex, place of living, severity of the disease, and pre...

Evaluation of safety and tolerability of calcitonin stimulation using high-dose calcium in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)

Kowalska Aldona , Palyga Iwona , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Sluszniak Anna , Gozdz Stanislaw

The pentagastrin-stimulated calcitonin test is known and widely used in monitoring patients with MTC. Given the problems of pentagastrin availability other diagnostic tests are being tried. The goal of the study was the evaluation of safety and tolerance of high-dose calcium to stimulate calcitonin in MTC patients.Materials: The study included 41 patients after surgery for medullary thyroid cancer who were under observation. Patient...

Comparison of calcitonin stimulation tests with pentagastrin (Pg) and high-dose calcium in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)

Kowalska Aldona , Palyga Iwona , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Sluszniak Anna , Gozdz Stanislaw

Introduction: The Pg calcitonin stimulation test is widely used in monitoring patients with MTC. In view of accessibility problems of Pg it is necessary to use high doses of calcium as the calcitonin stimulant. Objective: The aim of the study was the comparison of calcitonin concentrations after Pg and calcium stimulation, respectively.Materials: The study was performed in 31 patients under observation after deemed surgically cured ...

Diagnostic performance evaluation of marking the concentration levels of procalcitonin and ProGRP in monitoring disease cases of patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)

Kowalska Aldona , Gasior-Perczak Danuta , Palyga Iwona , Antczak Grazyna , Sluszniak Anna , Gozdz Stanislaw

Introduction: Calcitonin is the main MTC marker. However, it has limitations: rapid in vitro degradation, a concentration-dependent biphasic half-life, presence of different isoforms and high cost of a single trial. Other markers of MTC can be procalcitonin and ProGRP.Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of marking the levels of procalcitonin and ProGRP in monitoring patients with MTC.Material...
